BCWC Story

Our Special Story

Formerly known as Peffley’s Canadian Wilderness Camp, Bear Claw Wilderness Camp was bought and renamed in 2024 by myself, Toby Haughee of Indiana. I have a beautiful wife, Fran, and 4 incredibly bright children, Faith, Max, Bo, and Ty, so being away from my family during the camp season is incredibly difficult but we make it work with a great family support system.

I have known Dave Peffley for many years as guest of the camp so I am no stranger to this camp life here on Wabaskang Lake. Many fishing trips with my dad and uncles over the years made it easy to fall in love with this camp and surrounding area so the opportunity to buy it was not something I was about to miss out on. Now I get to offer this life to my kids, create my own new friendships with guests, new memories with family and friends, and turn my visions for this camp into my reality!

Extraordinary Experiences

At the end of the season in 2024 everything was about to change at Bear Claw Wilderness Camp forever when a terrible fire took two of the camp’s rustic cabins, severely burned one side of he lodge, and destroyed the camp’s septic system. That was by far the scariest, saddest day the camp has ever witnessed in all of it’s years standing. As the new owner, staff, and guests stood around and watched, everyone feeling completely hopeless and helpless, many eyes filled with tears. Luckily the winds took the flames in the opposite direction of the rest of the camp site so the other cabins were spared and everyone, including the staff cat, Meikah, got out on time. There were no injuries, however, thousands of dollars in damage along with lost personal items was endured.  Being short staffed for several weeks before the fire, Toby had a rough first season, but, persevered. The new seasons ahead brings about new beginnings and exciting ideas. This is now our  extraordinary story to tell with Bear Claw Wilderness Camp still standing strong, hopefully for decades and future generations to come!

“I am incredibly grateful the entire camp came together to support me during the fire and tried to help in any way possible. I have a very special place here and knowing I have guests that feel the same way makes such a difference!”
